Everyone is scrambling or sitting dumbfounded over what to do next. Almost immediately, the player realizes that Story Mode could in fact have a story. Imagine my pleasant surprise upon discovering this new approach when I played Injustice. I never played the new Mortal Kombat, nor have I heard how the story mode was built. There are times in the game where the computer will actually do some cheap moves and you’ll want to be ready to kick its teeth in for doing that. Inserting the game for the first time prompts a tutorial to acquaint the player with the basics followed by a few intermediate level combos. It’s a little Doom-ish, but there’s nothing wrong with that. The Insurgency discovers an alternate universe where Joker’s plan did not succeed and transport several of its super heroes to theirs in order to help them defeat the Regime. A battle ensues between the forces of Superman’s Regime and those allied with Batman’s Insurgency. Here’s the long and short of the synopsis:Īfter Joker destroys Metropolis and tricks him into killing Lois Lane and their unborn child, Superman murders him in front of Batman and establishes a new world order. NetherRealm Studios sought to remedy this hemorrhoid in the Mortal Kombat reboot and now in Injustice. Furthermore, there’s always a canon ending as opposed to the million different ones you get after playing each character on the roster, but you never know which one that is. Truthfully, one would just resort to Wikipedia just to find out what the hell was going on in that world. There isn’t a very organic way to keep the main story of the game and focus on your fighter’s own story at the same time. Who can forget Soulcalibur’s copout when they began resorting to walls of scrolling text or quick sketches of a sweeping last battle at the end? So disappointing… I understand none of us go into a fighting game for the story, but…can’t they at least put some effort into it? 2) The story modes are freaking terrible. I used to be awesome at it back when I played Soulcalibur 2 and Dead or Alive 2 obsessively, but no longer. There are two main reasons why I don’t delve into fighting games anymore: 1) I’m absolutely terrible at mashing button combos. You can check out both of the fighting game tie-in intros below with the first being Raiden's followed by Scorpion's.Injustice: Gods Among Us just came out this week, and yesterday I was able to sink my teeth into the Story Mode. Spawn himself is set to debut as a fighter in Mortal Kombat 11 starting March 17 for Kombat Pack owners. "Does you soul still burn?" is one of Soul Calibur's tag lines that people like producer Motohiro Okubo say all of the time when making new announcements, so this intro is a nice nod to Spawn's video game past without specifically needing to call up Bandai Namco for their approval. This wasn't the first time Todd McFarlane's signature character appeared in a fighting game, but it quickly became one of his most memorable partially due to his funny-looking ax. GameCube owners famously got the chance to play as Link from the Legend of Zelda in Soul Calibur 2 while Xbox players saw Spawn travel back in time as that platform's exclusive crossover character. Scorpion, who found a place in the original Injustice game, finds a bit of kinship in Spawn, as they both are warriors ressurected to do the bidding of evil masters though that doesn't make them friends exactly.Īl Simmons notes that Hanzo has also traveled across dimensions which prompts Scorpion to say "each had its own injustices." Spawn has the final zinger though by stating "maybe that's why my soul still burns." Meanwhile, Raiden got the chance to meet Bruce Wayne in NetherRealm Studios' last game, Injustice 2, where the klassic MK character would appear as a DLC character alongside Sub-Zero. This is of course a reference to good ol' Batman tying back to a couple special one-off comics from 1994 with both Spawn/Batman and Batman-Spawn: War Devil where he and Spawn crossed over into each others worlds to start out as enemies before teaming up to defeat the true villain at hand. Raiden can tell Spawn that he reminds the lightning god of "another dark knight" to which the new DLC character responds that he's an old friend. The first of these to stand out is a little more subtle than the second, but just by a bit.
